As the global economy pivots towards sustainability, the demand for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements (REEs) has surged. These materials are the cornerstone of modern clean energy technologies, powering everything from electric vehicles (EVs) to renewable energy storage systems. Africa, endowed with vast deposits of these resources, is increasingly at the forefront of the green energy transition. But how can the continent navigate its opportunities and challenges in this burgeoning sector?
The global push to reduce carbon emissions has created unprecedented demand for lithium-ion batteries, which require lithium and cobalt. Meanwhile, rare earth elements are essential for producing wind turbines, solar panels, and the magnets in EV motors. According to market projections, the demand for these minerals is expected to increase exponentially by 2030 as countries and corporations strive to meet their climate commitments.
Africa boasts significant reserves of critical minerals: Zimbabwe and Namibia are emerging as key lithium producers. Zimbabwe’s Bikita Mine, for example, is one of the largest lithium producers in the world. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) dominates global cobalt production, contributing over 70% of the world’s supply. Burundi, Madagascar, and South Africa have notable deposits of REEs, which are increasingly attracting investment.
The mining and export of critical minerals could stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and boost infrastructure development. Processing raw materials locally instead of exporting unrefined ore can significantly increase revenues and create new industries. Collaborating with global companies and governments can lead to technology transfers and capacity building.

However, the journey is not without challenges. Mining operations can cause significant environmental degradation, including deforestation, water pollution, and soil erosion. Sustainable practices are essential. Concerns over child labor and unsafe working conditions, particularly in cobalt mining in the DRC, have put African producers under international scrutiny. While asserting control over resources can be beneficial, overly restrictive policies may deter foreign investment. Moreover, African countries must compete with established players like Australia and China in supplying critical minerals.
Transparent regulations and enforcement mechanisms can attract sustainable investments while ensuring fair resource management. Developing advanced mining and processing technologies will enhance productivity and reduce environmental impact. African countries can benefit from pooling resources and knowledge under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Meeting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards will enhance the global competitiveness of African minerals.

Africa’s wealth of critical minerals places it in a pivotal position to shape the future of green energy technologies. By addressing the challenges of sustainability, ethical mining, and value addition, the continent can harness its resources to fuel global progress while ensuring long-term benefits for its people. As the world accelerates its green transition, Africa’s role in supplying these indispensable minerals has never been more crucial.
