Egypt Takes a Major Step in Localizing Mobile Phone Tower Manufacturing

In a significant move to boost local production and reduce dependency on imports, Egypt has established its first mobile phone tower manufacturing facility. The Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) announced the opening of this new facility, located within the group’s Aircraft Factory, as part of its broader mission to advance technological self-reliance in the country.

This initiative is a cornerstone of AOI’s strategy to localize technology and enhance the local production of critical infrastructure components. The facility marks a milestone in Egypt’s industrial capabilities, as it focuses on manufacturing mobile phone towers that were previously imported.

The inauguration of the manufacturing center was led by General Engineer Mokhtar Abdel Latif, chairman of AOI, alongside key figures such as Major General Engineer Abdel Rahman Abdel Azim Othman, AOI’s general director, and Major General Engineer Tarek Abdel Fattah Mohamed Hassan, chairman of the Aircraft Factory’s board of directors.

During the inauguration, Abdel Latif highlighted the importance of localizing mobile phone tower technology. He proudly announced that the center has achieved a 100% local manufacturing rate for these towers. The facility has already commenced production, meeting the needs of telecommunications giant Etisalat Misr. By the end of June, the center successfully manufactured and delivered 67 towers to Etisalat Misr under a framework agreement.

Looking ahead, production of an additional 70 towers for Etisalat Misr is underway, with completion expected by the end of September 2024. This collaboration signals a promising future for Egypt’s telecom infrastructure.

Furthermore, the AOI is working on expanding its reach within the telecommunications sector. The organization is in the process of negotiating memorandums of understanding with Telecom Egypt and other major communications companies in Egypt. These agreements aim to increase the production of communication towers on a larger scale.

In addition to serving the domestic market, the AOI is exploring opportunities to export these towers to other African and Arab nations, positioning Egypt as a key player in the regional telecommunications industry.

This initiative reflects Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its industrial base and advancing technological innovation, paving the way for greater economic self-sufficiency and regional influence.
